Lyca’s Gnanam Foundation Donated 10,000 L water tanks to the Divisional Secretariat of Kilinochchi. The water tank handing over ceremony was held on 23rd July 2014 at the Kilinochchi District Secretariat office with the participation of the Government Agent of Kilinochchi Mrs. R. Keetheswarn, Disaster Management Director Mr.Sugunathas, Kilinochchi District Disaster Management staffs and District Coordinator of Lyca’s Gnanam Foundation.
This donation will improve the drinking water facilities for the residents of Kilinochchi district who are mostly affected by the prevailing drought conditions in the area.
The Kilinochchi population mostly depends on agriculture for their day to day livelihood needs and the continuation of the drought in the Kilinochchi district may cause serious hardships to the community who have just resettled after a period of three year IDP living conditions.
Northern government authorities predict if the current dry weather condition continues, 60% of the paddy cultivation will be destroyed, leaving the farming community without any income generation for the year. Despite some rain earlier this week, Kilinochchi farming communities need several weeks to fill the dried up wells and reservoirs.
Lyca’s Gnanam Foundation, with its ongoing Livelihood Assistance Programmes in 11 districts of Sri Lanka, will also support them if the government of Sri Lanka declares a drought emergency situation in the northern districts.
